Retiring from Retirement: Reentering the Workforce in 2022

The COVID-19 pandemic threw a sharp curveball in the trajectories of countless lives, the aging workforce being no exception. From those who resigned from their positions out of health concerns to those who took their employers up on early retirement offers, many Americans suddenly exited their careers, assuming that chapter of their life had drawn to a close.

…Or so it had seemed. The past two years have bore witness to massive societal change, with breakthrough medical advancements that have allowed a once shuttered economy to spring back to life. If you’re a retiree feeling the financial sting of a sudden retirement or yearning for the stimulation of the workplace, you might be wondering: is there a place for me in this new economic era?

The answer, perhaps surprisingly, is yes – overwhelmingly so! In a time where the number of jobs available exceeds the hiring pool, employers have started turning to retirement-aged Americans to fill their positions. Likewise, the increase in remote options and flexible hours has allowed those who were once forced to choose between spending time with their families and pursuing work a solid compromise.

Where to Start?

If you’re considering reentering the job market, it can be easy to get overwhelmed. If it’s been years, maybe even decades, since you last built a resume, you may not know where to start! Luckily, there is a multitude of online resources that can help you take your first steps. The Connecticut Department of Labor has an overview of common resume formats, with tips on what to include and avoid. For those seeking a more hands-on approach, Goodwill offers free online career services, covering how to build resumes, write cover letters, and more.

Equally as important as building a resume is finding jobs to submit it to! Websites such as ZipRecruiter allow you to upload your resume and apply to job postings with a simple click. However, there are also job databases that cater specifically to older workers, such as RetirementJobs and WorkForce50, as well as local options like the Seniors Job Bank, which helps Connecticut residents find part-time opportunities. As stressful as job hunting can be, these resources have made the application process more streamlined than ever.
